Powers Clothing

Retail

We have always been primarily a Men's store but added a Women's section 15 years ago. Carrying everything from suits and wedding tuxedos to work clothes. Carhartt had a contest to prove who had been in business with them the longest and we were able to give them a check dated 1892, making us the oldest retailer!

David L. Powers opened our store in 1890, the Chicago Pike -Sauk Trail- was nothing more than a dirt trail. The first 4-5 years he moved several times before settling into our current location. In the early 1900's his son Ralph joined him and the store went by D.L. Powers & Son.

Ralph "Monty" Powers joined the store after serving as a pilot in World War II. A complete renovation was undertaken at that time and the name was changed to Powers Clothing. We were one of the first businesses to have air conditioning and carpeting. We had the appearance of a fine city store but never lost our desire to service the working men of the Jonesville area.

Monty's brother-in-law, Ray Pope joined the business in the 1960's. Their children David and Paul followed in their footsteps to take over the everyday operation of the business. Two of David's children Jim and Marcy were the next to step in. The sixth generation is now underway with Marcy's daughter Sara joining us.
