State and Federal Business Tax and Payroll Requirements

There are State and Federal requirements regarding payroll taxes and reporting, unemployment insurance, income tax withholding, worker's compensation, and business taxes. Information about State tax and reporting requirements, on-line filing and payment is available through the Michigan Department of Treasury and the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency. State Of Michigan businesses must also file Sales and Use taxes. Information about Federal taxes and reporting requirements, on-line filing and payment is available through the Internal Revenue Service.

  • Obtain a Federal Identification Number (EIN); certain types of business structures do not require you to have an EIN number, but it is good business practice to register for one no matter your business structure.

  • Register with the Internal Revenue Service for payment of Federal taxes.

  • Contact the township/city/village in which you are placing a business to see if any local taxes apply.
